The theme of this
project was cabinet of curiosities and within the theme I worked in
3D, fashion, graphics, textiles, fine art and photography. I explored
different techniques in all the disciplines and produced a final
piece in most of them. There were some disciplines that I enjoyed
more than others , but I wanted to try all to see if there were any
parts of the subjects that I didn't know about and also to see if I
could enhance my skills in the areas that I struggle.
In 3D I researched some
different 3D artist and cabinet designs and found some that inspired
me to make my final outcome. I started with create small version out
of card and paper, to establish how I was going to assemble it and if
what I had in mind would work. During making my cabinet I had some
problem which I solved after discussing with my tutor about possible
solutions.
With the time scale I
had to make the cabinet I am happy with the outcome. I tried new
things and used new equipment and for my first 3D piece I am pleased
with it. If I had more time I would have spent more time on the
measurements and I would have through about the painting of it more.
In fashion I was
recreating a piece of clothing. I researched some fashion illustrator
for some ideas and decided to do a shirt. I learnt how to use a
sawing machine and how to do some different type of sawing, such as
pleating, plating and more. Doing this made more confident with using
a sawing machine. I did some of my own illustrations and I like the
final outcome of them.
In graphics I looked at
letter forms and how to manipulated them. I looked at different
artist from collage artists to typographers, I found looking at
different artist made me release the amount of art-forms graphics
consists of. I found typography was the main part of graphics that I
enjoyed because I liked the different ways in which you can use
letters to create an art piece.
For my final piece I
had to create an alphabet in what every way I wanted. I choose to not
do them individually but as one piece of work. I tried out some
different ideas and settled on one.
In textiles I looked at
surface pattern, structured and random. I looked at both but decided
to go with structured because I like the look of structured and I
through a pattern should be uniform. I looked at different artist
colour pallets and created a sample of different designs using it. I
found some worked better than others but it helped me decide on what
colours worked best and the colours I wanted to use in my final
pattern design.
My final piece was A3
and was inspired by a broach which is in my cabinet of curiosities. I
chose water and ink because I like the effect the water has on the
ink. I also used water colour paint to add the colour. I choose blue
and a red/pink because I wanted a contrast and I think the colours
work well with each other.
In fine art I looked at
more abstract methods and then moved to still life. I did a couple of
observation drawings and then put some of my objects together. The
first thing I was introduced to was simply putting acrylic paint on
pictured and quickly go other the main features and then transverse
to a piece of paper. I found this really effective because its so
simply but it can create some interesting abstract pieces. I created
a still life and used oil pastels I didn't want to use the usual
material used for still life. I thought the outcome was ok but I
feel I could have done much better. I think I should have had more
patience when drawing initially.
In photography I have
looked a range of different photographers and different techniques. I
looked at typology's, chemi-grams, photo-grams, scanning and
animation. I think the one I most enjoyed was creating the typology
and the animation because I enjoy using Photoshop and editing images.
Overall I have really
enjoyed working in all the different disciplines and trying out new
things. I looking back at this first project I have enjoyed
Photography and 3D the most because I enjoyed making something that I
never thought I would enjoy and I also enjoy working on photoshop and
trying new things in photography.
