Photographers

Bernd and Hilla Becher

  • Bernhard Becher was born in German on the 20th August 1931, and Hilla Becher was born September 2, 1934.
  • They were German conceptual artists and photographers working as a collaborative duo. They are best known for their extensive series of photographic images, or typologies, of industrial buildings and structures, often organised in grids.
  • Most of the images they produce are in black and white and this makes the individual images look more similar and also makes the viewer focus more on the lines and shapes of the objects.
  • I like the idea of these series because not many images are organised and I like that about the collections.
  • In response to there work I have created a typology of some of the items in my cabinet of curiosity. I edited the images so they all looked the same size and so they were black and white.

Karl Blossfeldt

  • Karl Blossfeldt was born in 1865 and died 1932.
  • He was a German photographer, sculptor, teacher, and artist who was based in Berlin.
  • He is best known for his close-up photographs of plants and living things, which were published in 1929.
  • I love the sharpness of these images and the lighting used to create these images.
  • I think black and white really suits the images because it highlights the veins in the plants more and creates more of a contrast to the background. This also shows the shape better.
  • I like that the plants take up the how composition because it looks more busy even through some of the subjects are simply looking.
  • When looking at Robert Mapplethorpes lilies I looked back at Karl Blossfeldt work because I wanted to take some black and white roses and wanted to look at if the background should be in black or white.
